As I was raising my little girls, my dad shipped me a piano from Arizona. It was short an octave on each end. I had had quite a bit of music but decided to get down to serious breaking it down. Using the following method, it took about one year to understand how music is constructed.

Building triads, chord progression and doubling notes. Adding parts for soprano, alto and tenor voices. This 18th century harmony leads through choral music and other forms which eventually lead to the classical symphony.
